Training Programme | for Introduction to the Blue Economy webinars (Past Action)

 

Within the INTERREG Atlantic Area Project FANBEST (Funding Atlantic Network for Blue Economy Technology Transfer) an online transnational training programme composed by a series of webinars to enhance the capacity of advisers, support services, researchers and entrepreneurs in fundraising for technology transfer in the Blue Economy.

 

 

The Webinars are FREE OF CHARGE with a duration per webinar between 60 to 120 minutes maximum including a question/ answer session and practical exercises with the attendees. The webinars will make use of the Zoom platform and interactive tools to promote interact of attendees with supervisors. Training and material will be provided in English.

When: December 2020 to March 2021 (see below the overview of the webinar programme)

Who: The Training Programme has the following target group

      • Main target: consultants/trainers of incubators and accelerators, development agencies, knowledge transfer department of universities, etc
      • Secondary objective: any entrepreneur, researcher and manager with an interest in the Blue Economy

1 Marine renewable energy resources: offshore wind & ocean Renewable energy needs are expressed on all continents. The webminar will review these perspectives, the state of the art and the ambition of the European Union. The webminar will focus on the strengths of Offshore Wind and Ocean energy by making the link with the technologies developed in the Oil and Gas sector (theme #2). In particular, the assessment of world resources and the level of maturity of the main technologies will be presented: tidal energy, wave converters, ocean thermal energy converters and wind energy. The webminar will present shortly the principles of these technologies and will focus on the main ones: bottom fixed and floating wind turbines. In less than 30 years, offshore wind became a worldwide industry with one of the fastest growth rate of the energy sector. Current and planned developments will be presented. This webminar will also présent the advantages of the emerging technology of Floating  Wind Turbines. An introduction to Multi-Use Offshore Platforms will be offered, in connection with theme #4.

2 Marine extraction of oil & gas and minerals This webinar aims to describe the technical, geographical and economic environment as well as legal issues of the construction of offshore structures. We will recall the challenges and production capacities of deep offshore since 1950. The webminar will also briefly present the genesis of hydrocarbons and the large production basins as well as changes in demand and consumption. We will also present the main technologies for exceeding 1000 m of water depth. Finally, the development of new technologies has revealed a growing need for rare metals. Land resources are limited and some offshore deposits have been detected. We will present the legal issues of the exploitation of these deposits. We will also make the link with theme # 5 in order to understand how these technological challenges could have been used for MRE.

3 Marine biological resources: fisheries, aquaculture and processing One of the challenges for humanity during this century will be to support the increase in protein requirements until 2050. Intensive land exploitation sees its limits both qualitatively and ecologically. More than 200 species of seaweed are used worldwide for human consumption or as phycocolloids for food, cosmetics or health. Seaweeds are traditionally consumed in Asian countries, especially China, Japan and Korea Seaweeds while European consumption is still confidential. This webinar focuses with the wide seaweeds potentialities, from consumer perception changes to recent advances in research. A rapid history of seaweed farming and consumption will be described, followed by current seaweed market, applications and news trends involved in aquaculture, biotechnology and transformation processes. A link with the Multi-Use Offshore Platforms (theme #1) will be made. The webinar will also review the issues and news of fishing and aquaculture, particularly in terms of resource management and regulations, particularly health.

4 Maritime transport, ports and shipbuilding For more than a century, economic, cultural and social globalization has been on the rise and maritime transport has participated in this globalized economy. This webinar aims to understand the flows of maritime transport, these recent changes, these formidable technological advances which have repercussions on shipping companies, logistics chains as well as on port facilities. Various examples at the global level as well as at the regional or local level will help to understand the changes underway and the challenges that are emerging. 5 Maritime and coastal tourism More and more tourists aspire to spend vacations or weekends on a cruise or on the coast. The democratization of cruises has been obtained by the realization of larger and more energy efficient ships. The recent attractiveness of the coast can be explained, in many countries, by access to temperate zones in summer when the hinterlands are subject to more and more frequent heat waves. This webminar will discuss these phenomena and the associated figures. France is the world’s leading tourist destination, particularly through its coasts and its three maritime facades. We will therefore present the challenges for the French coast where the first logistical saturations are born and where the question arises, for many territories, of supporting the massification of coastal tourism at the risk of losing quality or on the contrary limiting the impacts. Among the related issues, we will also raise the quality of water, affected by mass tourism and crucial for ecosystems and certain other activities such as shellfish farming.

6 Emerging technologies and interdisciplinary issues (Biotechnologies, Marine Spatial Planning, Climate Change) This webinar brings together forward-looking topics that emerged less than 10 years ago and will be at the heart of the challenges of the coming decades:

– Marine biotechnologies: the webinar will present the production principles and target markets, in pharmacology, fuel production, cosmetics or food. deals with an emerging topic. The webinar will illustrate this technology with the first results of the Algosolis platform.
