The University of Santiago de Compostela promotes actions to strengthen the sea and the oceans as economic engines.

FAN-BEST, funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme, is the result of a consortium with partners from Spain, Portugal, France, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

 

Santiago de Compostela, 8 June 2023. “Connecting and uniting the University with companies”; this is what the coordinator of FAN-BEST and member of the Applied Financial Valuation Research Group of the USC, David Rodeiro, highlighted at the conference held to promote the development of the blue economy. Precisely to achieve this progress in the sector, entrepreneurship and the use of Artificial Intelligence have focused the reflections of the event Innovation and sustainability in the blue economy: entrepreneurship for a bluer future, which was held within the framework of the European project FAN-BEST, led by the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Port or logistics systems that make use of computer vision or smart cameras in the coming years will be at the forefront of technology. This is one of the ideas stressed by the experts who took part in the conference. Similarly, the speakers stressed that predictive systems are going to be decisive in identifying bottlenecks in the industrial sector.

Voice recognition and the use of chatbots are other elements that have also been put on the table as tools to help companies hold conversations with their customers.

Beyond the application of Artificial Intelligence, the conference served as a reminder of the need for the correct and safe advancement of this technology, as those who develop Artificial Intelligence in a reliable and robust manner will be the key, given that the European Union sets the line to be followed so that technological advances work under the required standards. For this reason, and to continue advancing in this aspect, the University of Santiago de Compostela has already presented a new candidacy that aspires to apply the advances of Artificial Intelligence to the blue economy sector.

 

Awards for the best ideas

During the day, the European project FAN-BEST, led by the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), has awarded the best ideas of entrepreneurial projects and startups that are committed to promoting the blue economy.

Specifically, the project recognised talent in a total of five categories: biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture, processing and distribution industry, transport and logistics, coastal and maritime tourism.
